What Makes You Different?

The Biggest Challenge

The biggest challenge we face in business is standing out from the crowd. This is so crucial that it’s a topic that comes up over and over again – and one that’s dear to my heart.

Whether you’re running your own business, working in sales or just wanting to stand out in the company you work for, standing out and getting noticed is important.

The Common Approach

Speaking on single topics, so that you’re not remembered for one thing. If you speak about many subjects, it becomes difficult for people to remember what you’re all about and you’re more likely to fade into the background (I know this from my own experience as well as learning about if from others).

Offering coaching or training on random individual subjects is guaranteed to put you into ‘just another trainer/speaker’ bracket rather than true authority. You become an ‘also ran’ instead of ‘the’ person to go to.

This is just as valid when you’re trying to be the ‘go to’ person in an organisation as well as the obvious context of sales and marketing.

The Successful Approach

Those who are successful, attracting clients to them or standing out as true leaders take a different approach. They become known as the ‘go to person’ for one particular thing. Even though that one particular field of expertise can be broken down into sections of different topics, it’s the ‘one thing’ that’s more easily remembered.

That one thing is a Signature System – or for leaders in an organization, it can be named as an academic reference or white paper – essentially, it’s the same thing with a different label.

The Signature System

Bringing together your area of expertise into one Signature System means that you can be easily remembered for it. Those with true expert status use the Signature System as the foundation for everything that you would associate with an expert:

  • Your book
  • Your product portfolio
  • Your signature talk
  • Your signature webinar
  • A series of shorter talks – all within the context of the larger system

Creating Your Signature System

I know – this all sounds like a great deal of work – but it isn’t. That’s because your signature system is based on one thing that I’ve mentioned time and time again – your ‘Expert MODEL’. Once you’ve created your MODEL, this can be expanded to create your Signature System and your book, your products and your talks all come from the same body of work that you’ve already created.

So you’re seen as a true expert, a credible authority in your field and it’s easy for you to be remembered as the creator of your Signature System.

Taking Action
